Project Brief
This project focused on creating an editorial illustration inspired by a book, article, TV series, or topic of personal interest. The objective was to develop a visual concept that effectively conveyed the message or themes of the source material while establishing a distinct illustrative voice. The work incorporated textures drawn from nature, interiors, architecture, everyday objects, and patterns to enrich the composition and add depth to the visual narrative. The goal was to explore the relationship between imagery, texture, and meaning, using illustration as a tool for storytelling and conceptual expression.
Severance is a science fiction thriller TV series about a team of office workers whose memories have been surgically divided between their work and personal lives. Through my illustration, I aimed to convey the psychological conflict between Mark's work self and outside self (innie and outie). The wavy vortex represents the separation of Mark's mind. Each part of his mind has distinct values and cares about different people, so within the vortex I depicted the two people that Mark's innie and outie care most about.
Throughout the illustration, I made use of a variety of textures to add depth and style. I wanted my art to convey a similar mysterious and trippy feeling that the TV series evokes. The final illustration can be viewed in any orientation, just as Mark and his mind can be seen and interpreted in multiple ways.
